April 28th 10am-9pm - At Ken Matsumoto's ART OBJECT GALLERY, Japantown San Jose
April 29th 10am-Noon at Art Object Gallery, Japantown San Jose

THE Wall of America, www.wallofamerica.org, project is coming to San Jose Japantown April 28-29th. You’ll find artist Ellen Griesedieck (yes, you’ll see her signature on Newman’s Own products!) and her team at the Art Object Gallery with Ken Matsumoto hosting the space. They’re hoping everyone will want to some of their thoughts and history on what will eventually be contributions of projects (led by Ellen) from all 50 states. The finished wall will be 5 stories tall and 125’ wide, installed in its own building with an interactive kiosk that will allow easy access to an informational database. All the work is chronicled in video and photograph (Ellen’s sister has been a CA Photographer of the Year and nominated for a Pulitzer Prize) so be prepared to sign a waiver for use of your image, words, and/or work. Please read Ellen’s description (of the project and what to expect when you come!

“The Wall of America, as part of it’s proposed goal of visiting and working on sections of the 48 ft x 120 ft artwork in all 50 states, is coming to California to do a project at the end of April. The focus of this particular event is to honor ancestors, relatives, and friends of families interned in camps during World War II. We will be doing parts of this project in Japan Town, San Jose, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and, at the Manzanar Pilgrimage on April 30th.

At each location, we are planning to bring people together to work on large pieces of handmade Japanese paper, painting, drawing, writing; animating the surface with ideas that honor the memory of all those interned in the 13 camps. We are asking participants to bring copies of photographs (we do not need the originals), pictures, flowers, memorabilia of any kind, things deemed significant or special that can be incorporated into the collaged pieces that will make up the giant DNA double helix. Do not hesitate to bring something that might seem tricky to incorporate. We love to be challenged.

I’m anxious to meet everyone who will be participating in this project. I know we are about to make something very special and I can’t wait to be part of it.”
