Background: San Jose’s Japantown is located on Taylor and
Jackson Streets, between 1st and 10th Streets. This historic
commercial district is more than 100 years old. The district was
designated as a Neighborhood Business District (NBD) in 1984 and was
adopted as a Redevelopment Project Area in 1993. It became the third
Business Improvement District (BID) in 1987. There are currently
more than 129 businesses including restaurants, specialty foods, and
services businesses in this district.
NIJIYA, a market specializing in gourmet Japanese Ingredients,
fresh fish (sashimi quality), meats, organic produce, fruits and
natural ingredients. The market opened its first store in San Diego
in 1986. Currently, there are more than ten Nijiya Markets located
throughout California.
Grand Opening activities will include a ribbon cutting, music
from the Steve Nakano Jazz Band, a sake barrel breaking and special
sales and giveaways inside the market.
